Introduction to Global Citizenship and PBI Project

Students will be able to understand the meaning, key concepts, purpose and requirements of the compelling questions with the help of the teacher’s examples, demonstrations, and explanations as well as peer discussions.

Lesson
Introduction and discussion (15 minutes)

Hook: show students the music video---"Heartbeat, A Song for Syria". Discuss what they can get from this music video 1) What did the war bring to Syrian children 2) What can we do to help them 3) What are global responsibility and global citizenship 4)What is the global perspective

Students will be divided into small groups with 4-5 students in each. They will be given different stories (e.g. Little Mermaid, Snow White), clips (e.g. Spiderman, Monkey King), or pictures (snapshot from video games). They will share among team members the information they get from these materials. This activity is to help students be conscious of the information books, films, and video games are delivering to them.

One student from each group will share briefly about their findings in class.

Initiate a discussion: Is the information they get from these media the true reflections of this world?

Introduce the compelling question: How have books, films, and video games shaped your perception of the world? The supporting questions will also be offered to help students organize their project.
Explicit instruction/Teacher modeling (15 minutes)

The teacher will explain why we have this compelling question based on students sharing and discussions. The goal is to help students realize the importance of it and how close it relates to their lives.

The teacher will illustrate with PowerPoint and discussion about the essential concepts of this project such as perception of the world, culture and social value, diversity, gender equality, character prototypes, and violence. It will be done with materials given to students at the beginning of the class. The goal is to help students understand the perspectives they can have to approach the compelling question. There will be a modification if needed.

The teacher will show students the video of PBI global “Water” to help students understand what a PBI project can be.

The students will be working in the fixed group for the whole project.

To review the key points of this project by Q & A. The goal of the review is to ensure students are clear about this project.
