Reflections
This unit is designed to help students be conscious of the influence of multiple media have on them to be global citizens. During the process, students will also learn how to cooperate with classmates, how to communicate with the teacher, how to solve problems, and what they can do to serve their school and local communities. Students will also reflect on their benefit from this project.
The highlights and pitfalls will be valuable experiences for future PBI projects. The obstacles happen in the unit are 1) It is students' first time to do PBI project. They are not familiar with and confident about the process. 2) It is not easy to choose the proper reading material which fits students' language level, interest, and cognitive level. 3) Students need to read and watch various materials. It is a challenge to their linguistic ability. 4) Students are used to receiving information rather than choose and analyze information critically. 5) Some students seldom use digital tools.
In order to overcome these difficulties, 1) I conducted various activities such as teacher's model, group discussion and adopted different materials such as music, text, and videos to help students to get familiar with the process of PBI project and essence of global citizenship. 2) I provided materials of different formats and language difficulty for students. They felt free to choose their own materials. 3) I took different teaching approaches such as differentiated teaching and blended learning to help students gather and analyze information. Besides, several Apps were given to help them understand materials and write correctly. 4) Students were assisted by the bibliographic organizer, claim sheet, and rubrics to form their logical-evidence based claims. They also got help from peer review and teacher-student conference. 5) I encouraged students to try digital tools by showing how I use them and offer help while they are using the tools.
Meanwhile, it is really worthwhile to explore how this project makes a good effect on schooling and parenting. This project sheds a light on school and family education as well as industry regulation from the following aspects: 1) children’s literature selection 2) children’s critical thinking development 3) culture recognition and appreciation 4) family education assistance 5)appeal to the industry regulation.
